Two Clarkson Students Recipients Of Scholarships From New York Association Of Consulting Engineers

Two Clarkson University students are among ten students from colleges and universities across the state to receive undergraduate engineering scholarships from the New York Association of Consulting Engineers (NYACE).

Seniors Lauren Crocker (DeWitt, N.Y.) and Kathryn Cyr (Gorham, Maine), both civil and environmental engineering majors, will each receive a $2,500 scholarship.  The students will receive their awards at NYACE’s fall conference in Saratoga Springs.

“Lauren and Kathryn are excellent, hard-working students, and are well deserving of these awards,” said Tom Young, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Clarkson. “They each have a promising future before them in the field of engineering.”

Selections were made based on the students’ cumulative grade-point average, an essay, work experiences, and college activities.

Lauren Crocker is president of the University’s New York Water Environment Association and corresponding secretary of the student chapter of the American Society of Civil and Environmental Engineers. As part of an internship, she spent last summer learning about agents, such as mercury, that poison land and water.

In addition to civil engineering, Kathryn Cyr has a strong interest in construction management. She is an active participant in Clarkson’s Construction Management Team, part of the award-winning SPEED program that challenges students to participate in hands-on engineering competitions. This past year, the Construction Management Team took first prize in a regional competition. She is a member of the women’s varsity tennis team and several honor societies and has participated in the Big Sister Program and is a GE Women’s Leadership Conference volunteer

Founded in 1921, the NYACE is the oldest continuing organization of professional consulting engineering firms in the United States. A statewide organization, its members represent all major engineering disciplines and range from highly specialized individual practitioners to multidisciplinary firms employing thousands with branch offices worldwide.
