Clarkson Professor Elected Vice President Of International Technical Communications Organization

Clarkson University Professor and Chair of the Department of Technical Communications Bill Karis of Potsdam has been elected vice president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing (ATTW). He will assume the office of ATTW president in 2005.

Karis’ research and teaching interests include environmental rhetoric and instructional design.karis

His published scholarship has won awards from the National Council of Teachers of English and the Society for Technical Communication. He currently serves as co-editor of the book series ATTW Contemporary Studies in Technical Communication, as well as acting as a reviewer for a number of scholarly journals.

He has participated in two National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminars and has been associated with over $900,000 of funded research. Recently, Karis was the keynote speaker at the annual conference of the Council for Programs in Scientific and Technical Communication held at Carnegie-Mellon University, and was an invited speaker at SUNY Stony Brook’s day-long symposium on technical communications in engineering.

Karis joined the faculty at Clarkson in 1984 as an assistant professor and has been named an Outstanding Adviser three times. He holds a doctoral degree in English from Kent State University.

The Association of Teachers of Technical Writing was formed in 1973 to encourage dialogue among teachers of technical communication and to develop technical communications as an academic discipline.  ATTW has some 1,000 members, and includes faculty and graduate and undergraduate students of technical communication as well as professional technical communicators in business and industry.
