Clarkson University Again Ranked Among Best Colleges By U.S. News & World Report

Engineering and Supply Chain Management Programs

Singled Out As Outstanding

Clarkson University has once again been ranked among the Best National Universities in U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2004.

In addition, the 2004 rankings Web site recognizes the University as offering one of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs in the nation and ranks the Clarkson School of Business 16th in the nation for its supply chain management program.

“Clarkson has consistently ranked among the top schools in this guide and it is gratifying to be recognized again for our program achievements,” said Clarkson President Tony Collins. “Of course, this is only one measure of success. Clarkson has received endorsements and unprecedented support of our institution through national awards, accreditations, and most notably, the generous gift from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation in strong support of our engineering program and to fund new initiatives.”

Clarkson ranked in the top half of the “Best National Universities-Doctoral” category, a grouping that includes Princeton, Harvard, MIT, Columbia, as well as RPI and Boston University.  With 3,000 students, Clarkson is one of the smallest universities in the top 125 schools.

“It is exciting to be highly competitive with larger institutions in this elite category,” says Collins. “Our size may be our greatest advantage. Students choose Clarkson because it provides an intimate, collaborative learning environment.  Our undergraduates have unique opportunities to work on high-powered research projects alongside world-class faculty, become involved in interdisciplinary team projects, and secure internships and co-ops with our corporate partners.

“Because of the education we provide, we are able to attract ambitious, first-rate students, many of whom are recognized with national awards and scholarships. Even in a tight job market, our graduates remain highly competitive and an impressive number of our students go on to pursue advanced degrees,” added Collins.

In determining the Best Colleges, U.S. News categorized more than 1,400 accredited four-year institutions. Institutions considered for the “National Universities-Doctoral” category must offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees, and have active research programs.

Recognized as one of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs at schools whose highest degree is a doctorate, all seven of Clarkson’s engineering degree programs were reaccredited in the past year. Software engineering was one of the first programs of its kind in the nation to be accredited. Two engineering undergraduates were also chosen to receive the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship this year.

Listed as one of the top-20 programs in the nation for supply chain management, Clarkson’s School of Business is ranked among other nationally known schools of business such as Michigan State, Arizona State and MIT.

Last year Clarkson redesigned its undergraduate business program to meet new demands from industry and the global marketplace. The School of Business created four new multidisciplinary business majors, including a concentration in supply chain management.

In determining the Best Business Programs, U.S. News asked deans and senior faculty at the undergraduate business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business to rank the quality of existing programs.

Earlier this year, the Clarkson School of Business was also a runner-up for the 2003 USASBE National Award in Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Education and was featured in Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the top 25 regionally ranked academic programs, out of 700 entrepreneurship programs considered for the study.
