Clarkson University Again Ranked Among Best Colleges By u.s. News & World Report

Engineering Program Singled Out As Outstanding

Supply Chain Management Program Ranked #14 in Nation

Clarkson University has once again been ranked among the Best National Universities in U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2005.

In addition, the 2005 rankings Web site recognizes the University as offering one of the “Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs” in the nation and ranks the Clarkson School of Business 14th in the nation for its supply chain management program. That ranking is up two positions from last year.

“Clarkson has consistently ranked among the top schools in this guide and it is gratifying to be recognized once again for our program achievements,” said Clarkson President Tony Collins.

In determining the Best Colleges, U.S. News categorized more than 1,400 accredited four-year institutions. Clarkson ranked in the top 180 of the “Best National Universities-Doctoral” category. Institutions considered for the “National Universities-Doctoral” category must offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees, and have active research programs. With some 3,000 students, Clarkson is also one of the smallest universities included in the top schools.

Clarkson’s position is unique on the higher education landscape. With just 3,100 students in total, including 400 graduate students, we are one of the smallest national research universities,” said President Collins. “Yet, we also stand out because we have retained our commitment to undergraduate learning in this research environment. In both teaching and research, our size has proven to be an advantage. The intimate, collaborative learning environment promotes communication, teamwork, personal interaction, and flexibility.

Clarkson is able to attract some of the best and brightest students, many of whom are recognized with national awards and scholarships. Freshmen retention rate is 87 percent and the University maintains solid graduation rates. “Over the past two decades Clarkson has grown not in size but, more significantly, in quality. Our reputation among peer institutions continues to evolve,” said Collins.

Clarkson was also recognized as one of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs at schools whose highest degree is a doctorate. The job placement rate for Clarkson-trained engineers is one of the nation’s highest and in recent years has been at or near 100 percent. The University’s engineering graduates are accepted in the best advanced degree programs in the country, including Cal Tech, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and the University of Michigan.

Listed as one of the top-15 programs in the nation for supply chain management, Clarkson’s School of Business is ranked among other nationally known schools of business such as Michigan State, Arizona State, and Ohio State University-Columbus.  Clarkson was also one of only four private universities included. The other three were MIT, Carnegie-Mellon, and the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton).

In determining the Best Business Programs, U.S. News asked deans and senior faculty at the undergraduate business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business to rank the quality of existing programs. 

Earlier this year, the Clarkson School of Business was also featured in Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the top 100 entrepreneurial colleges and universities in the United States. More than 825 entrepreneurship programs were researched for the study. Clarkson appears in the list of the top 26 regionally recognized entrepreneur programs in the country. In addition, Clarkson’s Interdisciplinary Engineering and Management program is considered by many in industry to be the best of its kind in the nation.
