Collins began his tenure at Clarkson in 1982 as an assistant professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, subsequently rising to the rank of professor. He also assumed increasing levels of administrative responsibility, including department chair, dean, vice president for Academic Affairs, and provost. Collins has received Clarkson’s John W. Graham Faculty Research Award, the Distinguished Teaching Award, and two Outstanding Advising Awards. He became the University’s 16th president in 2003.

Collins received his undergraduate civil engineering degree from Monash University in Melbourne Australia and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Prior to his doctoral studies he was employed as an environmental engineer by Australian Consolidated Industries and Utah Development Company.

Member colleges of cIcu confer 59% of the bachelor’s degrees, 74% of the master’s degrees, and 81% of the doctoral and first professional degrees earned in New York State. Member campuses enroll nearly 440,000 students, including 287,000 New York State residents. One in three New Yorkers enrolled full time at independent colleges and universities in the state comes from a family earning less than $40,000 annually. More than 53% of African-American and Latino students who earn their bachelor’s and graduate degrees in New York State receive their education at independent colleges and universities.
