The Clarkson University Physical Therapy Club joined the crusade to help fight cancer by staging the Relay for Life event to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Relay for Life is an overnight event where people form teams and the goal is to have at least one person from each team on the track at all times to raise money for the American Cancer Society to help support cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. relayforlife2005

”The thought behind (walking the track at all times) is that cancer never stops and neither will we,” said event chair Karyn Blake ’08 who is also the treasurer of the P.T. club at Clarkson.

Nineteen different teams with 222 registered walkers, along with approximately 30 other supporters, staged the event from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on April 1 and 2 at the Indoor Recreational Center at Clarkson’s Alumni Gymnasium. In addition to walking the track, there were plenty of other activities to keep everyone awake and busy, including a three-hour basketball tournament, a poker tournament, a volleyball tournament, and Fuller Pool was also open for the duration. A Syracuse-area band, Uptown Odyssey, performed and music was also provided by WTSC 91.1 FM. ARAMARK contributed free food for all of the participants as well. With outstanding support from the local community, the Relay for Life event raised $12,847 in its first year and was considered a tremendous success.

”We raised (nearly) $13,000 this year and I would really love to double that next year,” said Blake. “We set high standards this year and I’m very proud of that. I’m so proud to be a part of this school and community because it’s really such a supportive environment.”

Numerous awards were handed out during the event including Best Team Theme (Circle K), Best Theme Banner (Christine’s Crusaders), Most Money Raised (Sigma Chi, which totaled over $2,500), Most Money Raised Per Capita (Christine’s Crusaders, which raised over $200 per person), Most Relay Spirit (Skiers and Runners), and Most Money Raised Per Individual (Christine McGrath, who raised over $1,100).
