Clarkson Student Wins Ultimate Virtual Appliance Challenge

VMware Inc., a global leader in software for industry-standard virtualized desktops and servers, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, has announced that Clarkson University senior Zachary J. Colgan has won a cash prize of $5,000 in the Ultimate Virtual Appliance Challenge. VMware sponsored the competition to foster continued innovation in developing virtual appliances, which are pre-built, pre-configured and ready-to-run software applications packaged with the operating system into virtual machines.

Virtual appliances are changing the software distribution paradigm because they allow application builders to choose the best operating system for their application and deliver a turnkey software service to the end-user.

Contestants were tasked to design and build self-contained single-purpose environments that included a preconfigured open-source operating system and a preconfigured application that provides

specific functionality. These environments were packaged into virtual machines, which can run on standard computing hardware in any of VMware's virtualization products, without the need for a separate system for each application or environment.

Open Network Registrar, Colgan's entry, provides a Web-based drop-in administration tool for the Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). The functionality that the Open Network Registrar provides is the ability to manage Domain Name Server (DNS) and DHCP in tandem.

DNS is the system which translates Web site names that are easy for humans to understand (for example,, into IP addresses that computers and network equipment can handle (for example,

DHCP is a service provided on networks with many computers that allows each computer to automatically receive the network settings necessary to operate on the network. This saves administrators the work of having to visit each computer on the network to configure settings, and makes it easy to change network settings without having to revisit client machines. The ability to manage settings for both systems through a secure Web interface makes it easy for administrators to

quickly and securely make changes, as well as get the systems going in short order.
