Clarkson Distinguished Chemistry Professor Named Fellow of International Aerosol Research Assembly

Philip K. Hopke, the Bayard D. Clarkson Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and director of Clarkson University's Center for Air Resources Engineering and Science (CARES) has been elected a Fellow of the International Aerosol Research Assembly (IARA), a nonprofit organization of scientists, engineers and environmentalists sharing technical advances in the field of aerosol research.

The prestigious International Aerosol Fellow Award is given biennially to two scientists in recognition of their outstanding contributions to aerosol science and technology through research, technical development, education, and/or service. The award was presented at the International Aerosol Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota, September 10 -15.

The IARA is made up 13 member societies from around the world, including The American Association of Aerosol Research. The Assembly's purpose is to promote scientific knowledge and cooperation in the field of aerosol research internationally.

Hopke is a universally renowned expert on airborne pollution, who has brought over $12 million in external research funding into Clarkson University. He serves on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Science Advisory Board and was a member of the National Research Council's (NRC) Congressionally mandated Committee on Research Priorities for Airborne Particulate Matter and the Committee on Air Quality Management in the United States. He has also served on five other NRC committees.

Hopke earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Trinity College and both a Master's and Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University. He has contributed chapters to 70 scientific books, authored or co-authored 360 journal articles, presented 75 invited addresses, and participated in 515 additional professional addresses. Hopke has authored or co-authored numerous technical reports.
