Liya L. Regel, professor of electrical & computer engineering and director of the International Center for Gravity Materials Science and Applications (ICGMSA) at Clarkson University, recently returned from Europe where she presented several invited lectures to organizations in France and Italy. Regel, an internationally recognized scientist, is also becoming internationally famed as an artist.

Regel is also a role model for women. She presented a lecture on "Women's Faces in Men's Places" in Paris at a special conference titled "Femme du21e' Siecle: Ingenieur, Scientifique, Femme d'Affaires et Artist, et Femme et Mathematiques." This unique event was organized specifically for Regel's lecture by French women's societies - Femmes Ingenieur, Science, Mathematiques and Art. In her speech, she discussed the role of women in the 21st century as leaders in academia, industry and government. regel3

As guest lunch speaker for the European Professional Women Network in Paris, Regel described her science and art. Traveling on to Italy she gave an open lecture to a large audience of students, faculty and guests at Torino Polytechnic University, demonstrating her latest creations in science, art, poetry and original music. The presentation marked the opening of the University's school year. Several other invited presentations pertaining to her science and art were given in Italy and France.

Educated in the former Soviet Union, Regel holds a Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematical Science and a prestigious Doctorat (which is beyond the Ph.D.) for significant achievements in Solid State Physics. She joined Clarkson in 1991 as ICGMSA director. In 2002, Clarkson awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Science, thereby making her simultaneously an alumna, faculty member, and center director. In May 2006, she was awarded her second Honorary Doctor of Science, this one from Alabama A&M University, thereby also making her an alumna of this university.
