U.S. Rep. John M. McHugh has announced the nomination of Clarkson School student Alina Beck for competitive appointment to the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Beck was one of 16 students nominated by the congressman to academies of the armed forces. The nominations are necessary for an application to be considered by any of the academies. abeck

"We are extremely proud of Alina Beck's recent appointment to West Point" said Shailindar Singh, interim head of the Clarkson School. "Alina is a bright and self-directed young woman and another in a long line of recent Clarkson School students to gain admission to highly selective institutions. College admissions committees value the rigor involved in attending the Clarkson School and we are proud to work with such motivated young people."

Beck attended the Clarkson School, rather than staying in high school for her senior year in order to challenge herself and to give her a better chance of being accepted into West Point. Like many Clarkson School students, Beck views the bridging program through the University as a stepping-stone to a brighter future. She recognizes that being a part of the Clarkson School has provided her with many advantages.

Through the Clarkson School, Clarkson University offers a unique, specially designed program for exceptional high school students who have completed the eleventh grade or are otherwise accelerated, and are ready to begin their collegiate studies. Approximately 60 academically talented students from throughout the U.S. and the international community are accepted into the Clarkson School each year. Nearly all students rank in the top 10 percent of their high school classes, have been involved in activities outside the class room and have demonstrated their ability to succeed in a higher education environment.
