Clarkson to Host EMR Vendor Fair for the Region's Physicians

Clarkson University School of Business is hosting an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Vendor Fair on Wednesday and Thursday, April 25-26, 2007, in the ground-floor atrium of the Bertrand H. Snell Hall building. The venue will provide North Country physicians and practice managers the opportunity to meet with vendor representatives to find out more about EMR platforms and requirements, to discuss their medical practice needs, and to experience hands-on demos of software packages. Many of the major certified EMR vendors for small practices will be in attendance. The event is open to all private practice physicians, physicians employed by hospitals and health care centers, as well as IT personnel and others interested in this new and exciting health information technology.

A luncheon "roundtable" panel discussion on EMRs in the Small Practice is in the works for noon on Wednesday, April 25, to kick off the fair, providing physicians with first-hand accounts from a physicians' perspective about moving to a paperless practice. The EMR Vendor Fair will be open from noon - 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25; 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26.

The Clarkson University School of Business is excited to play a role in facilitating a regional electronic medical records project, says School of Business Associate Dean Mike Wasserman. "We hope this initiative helps regional health care providers manage the daunting task of recordkeeping, billing and information management using EMR systems. By making it easier for our area's small private practices to enjoy the cost and efficiency benefits of EMR, we are actually helping them focus on doing what they do best - providing high quality health care to the citizens in our area. By helping area medical practitioners connect with a variety of EMR vendors in one place through the EMR Vendor Fair, we are trying to reduce the burden on medical staffs in terms of decision making and implementation of these systems."

The EMR Fair is being hosted by Clarkson University as a community outreach function in support of a client-driven project in which the School of Business has been working closely with the North Country Physicians Organization (NCPO). Over this past year, student teams participating in the Clarkson Consulting Group have performed site visits of NCPO member medical practices, both assessing the current levels of IT technical expertise, software and hardware and connectivity assets, office management tasks and practices, as determining future requirements for EMR adoption.

To receive the best information from each vendor, medical practice representatives are encouraged to come prepared to discuss current office workflow, current hardware and software and anticipated needs, billing procedures, level of computer/technical expertise in the office, and interface with other service providers.

The EMR Vendor Fair is free of charge, though preregistration is encouraged, especially for the Wednesday noon Luncheon Roundtable. Please contact Courtney Johnson-Woods, assistant director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Clarkson School of Business (315-268-3995), to register for the Luncheon, the Vendor Fair and for more information.
