Over 200 students, presenting 80 separate projects, participated in the Energy Science Fair as part of the North Country Sustainable Energy Fair on April 27. The SUNY Canton Campus Center gym was packed with students and their teachers as a team of judges reviewed the projects and chose the winning entries. Energy Science 2007

Projects ranging from the need to recycle - to a home movie on peak oil concerns - to nuclear power illustrated the students' concern about the environment and energy. Students offered their creative solutions for their own energy future. A keynote presentation by middle school teacher Jim Juczak, So. Jefferson Middle School in Watertown, provided an overview of our energy consumption habits and his own personal approach to saving energy at his home in Adams Center - Woodhenge.

In the 7th - 9th grade category, first place was received by Seba Molnar and Brigid Carr for their project "Anaerobic Digestion to Generate Biogas From the School's Sheep." The students attend Little River Community School with teacher Steve Molnar. Jessica Anderson from Colton-Pierrepont Central School, with teacher Walt Kissam, received second place for her project on Wind Energy.

In the high school category (grades 10-12), Alex Jenseth and Matt Stankiewicz received first place with a comparative analysis of Al Gore's assessment of global climate change versus others who debunk his assessment, and Jeff Jones and David Pynchon received second place for their project on the highly efficient Stirling engine. Students from both winning high school teams were from Tom Van deWater's class at Canton High School.

The Energy Science Fair was coordinated by Clarkson University's Office of Educational Partnerships and Community Energy Services' Project Green Teams with the support of the North Country Energy Fair organizers and SUNY Canton. Next year's Energy Science Fair will be held on April 25, 2008.
