Clarkson University Offers Unique Summer Program for High School Students in July

The Young Scholars Program (YSP), a unique summer experience for talented high school students, will once again be offered by Clarkson University. The weeklong program for rising juniors and seniors, held on Clarkson's campus from July 22 to July 28, is still accepting applications. You can find the application online at .

YSP is a selective program with a unique approach. Consistent with Clarkson's overall mission of interdisciplinary education and spanning boundaries, students are given a problem to examine and solve from three different perspectives: engineering, business and ethics.

This year, the summer scholars will approach, research and generate solutions to form "Small Is Beautiful New Home Design," a fictional housing design firm dedicated to providing creative small home designs for a variety of markets in an effort to save energy and worldwide resources.

William Vitek, associate professor of philosophy and director of the Clarkson Ethics Initiative, and Steve W. Yurgartis, associate professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering of the Coulter School of Engineering, will teach and assist students during this year's YSP. Amy Schroh, interim head of School and director of Academic Counseling of The Clarkson School, will host and direct the event.

This is an extremely relevant topic given the limits in worldwide supplies and the increase in the cost and demand of energy to heat and power homes, said Schroh. "This innovative program sparks intellectual development and requires students to exercise strong communication skills and cooperative problem solving."

The week also includes a day trip to a nearby summer camp, which provides students with the opportunity to participate in an adventure program consisting of low and high ropes courses.

Past topics and projects have included: We Can Get There From Here: Rethinking Public Transportation In A Post Carbon-World, Redesigning Portable Housing, Waterfront Recreation-Development Plan (If We Build It, Will They Come?), and Small is Bountiful: Advanced Technology Down on the Farm.

The Young Scholars Program is administered by The Clarkson School, the University's early entrance program for talented high school students who have completed the eleventh grade and are ready to begin their college studies.

Clarkson University, located in Potsdam, New York, is a private, nationally ranked university with a reputation for developing innovative leaders in engineering, business, the sciences, health sciences and the humanities.
