Yongming Liu has been appointed assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Clarkson University. He will begin teaching this fall.

Liu received his B.S. and M.S. in structural engineering from Tongji University in Shanghai, and his Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

After receiving his Ph.D., Liu worked as a postdoctoral research associate in the department of civil and environmental engineering at Vanderbilt, where he researched probabilistic multi-scale damage modeling, reliability and damage modeling and stochastic modeling, as well as mentoring four graduate students in their Ph.D. research. Liu's research interests include fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and structures, probabilistic computational mechanics, risk assessment and management, multi-physics damage modeling and structural durability, multi-scale uncertainty quantification and propagation, structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, and stochastic finite element methods.

He is the co-principal investigator of a $1.4 million, five-year research project, sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration William J. Hughes Technical Center for its aging aircraft program; a project sponsored by the Transportation Technology Center on strategies to prevent wheel failure; and a project sponsored by the Union Pacific Railroad on a reliability analysis of railroad wheels.

Liu has cowritten articles in a number of publications, including the International Journal of Fatigue, Reliability Engineering and System Safety, Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures, and Engineering Fracture Mechanics. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the American Society of Composites.

Clarkson University, located in Potsdam, New York, is a private, nationally ranked university with a reputation for developing innovative leaders in engineering, business, the sciences, health sciences and the humanities. At Clarkson, 3,000 high-ability students excel in an environment where learning is not only positive, friendly and supportive but spans the boundaries of traditional disciplines and knowledge. Faculty members achieve international recognition for their research and scholarship and connect students to their leadership potential in the marketplace through dynamic, real-world problem solving.
