The competiveness of the U.S. economy depends on innovation, says Collins. "And science, engineering and business majors play a particular role in the innovation economy. That role needs to be reinforced and developed during their college education."

Collins is concerned with universal testing requirements, government-mandated data submissions and the dictation of mathematics and science course offerings at all higher education institutions. "We all want to safeguard America's leadership role in accelerating innovation in the workplace and society," says Collins. "But a series of standard yardsticks and required courses will not give us an 'easy button' to generate greater aptitude among future generations of scientists, mathematicians, health care providers, engineers and business persons."

The Business Council's annual meeting attracts about 500 top business and government leaders in the state for discussions on policy issues that matter to the state's business community. Council members represent employers of well over 1 million New Yorkers in all parts of the state and all sectors of business, industry, education, and not-for-profit activity.
