North Country Matters TV Show to Feature Bill Vitek on

Prof. Bill Vitek's presentation "Joyful Ignorance and the Civic Mind" is an essay from his book The Virtues of Ignorance: Sustainability, Complexity, and the Limits of Knowledge, co-edited with Wes Jackson and forthcoming this spring from the University Press of Kentucky.

Joyful ignorance, Vitek claims, is a willful, defiant, rebellious act in the face of the obvious, of certainty, of security and control, and of domination. He uses the work of forester and philosopher Aldo Leopold to describe what he calls a more civic way of knowing, or the "civic mind," and ends with some suggestions for educators and policy makers interested in promoting it.

Vitek is an associate professor of philosophy at Clarkson University, where he has taught for 20 years. He has a B.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from Union College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

North Country Matters continues to be the only show on North Country cable systems focused entirely on local issues, featuring stories about local people, produced entirely by folks living here. There is no other show like it north of the Blue Line.
