Clarkson University graduate students Nate S. Barlow and Mathew D. Ingraham were awarded first place in the college division of this month's Jefferson County Energy Smart Expo competition in Watertown, N.Y. The expo was organized by WPBS television and sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). EnergyExpo 2008

Barlow and Ingraham, who are both funded through projects run through Clarkson's Office of Educational Partnerships, presented a poster and display titled "Saving Energy through Education - the Energy Choices Game." They helped to develop the game and have been using it as a teaching tool in eighth-grade classrooms through Clarkson's National Science Foundation-funded K-12 Project-Based Learning Partnership Program.

The board game was developed to increase children's awareness of the issues faced from rising energy costs and potentially dwindling supplies. It empowers them to save their game dollars by making wise energy choices as they progress through the game.

The team was advised by Jan DeWaters, Environmental Science and Engineering Ph.D. candidate, and Susan Powers, associate dean of engineering.

CDs containing the files needed to make an Energy Choices board game are available to educators free of charge through Clarkson's Office of Educational Partnerships. Contact Diane Brouwer at or 315-268-3791.
