Clarkson University to Greet Largest Freshman Class in 22 Years

Job placement rates, starting salaries and sought after majors are all factors that have contributed to Clarkson University's largest freshman class since 1986, according to the school's top admission official.

The University plans to greet 690 members of the Class of 2012 in late August. A total of 783 new students, including transfer and Clarkson School students, have placed deposits for the upcoming school year.

Our reputation for career focus, an excellent job placement rate, strong starting salaries, and marketable majors have all contributed to a steady increase in students, says Director of Admission Brian T. Grant. "In the past ten years, we've also more than doubled the number of under-represented students in the first-year class."

This year, 74 African American, Native American, Asian and Latino students will enter the University. Female students are at a ten-year high, with 175 women slated as members of the Class of 2012. And 42 percent of the class is in the top ten percent of their high school classes.

Grant attributes some of the enrollment uptick to an increase in campus visits. "We did see more on-campus interviews this year," he says. "We promote the fact that the only way to get a real feel for Clarkson is to visit. And students that visit actually do apply at a much higher rate."

Grant also attributes the high admission numbers to the marketing of Clarkson's new campus master plan, a higher ranking in the U.S. News & World Report College Guide, and the University's new marketing program, launched in 2005. "The phrase 'Defy Convention' is even popping up in students' admission essays," he says.

The admission staff isn't taking all the credit, though. "It's not just Admission that recruits, but also our faculty, staff, students and alumni," says Grant. "Our alumni admissions program is very strong. They work closely with these students at college fairs and in one-on-one meetings in the students' hometowns. This teamwork is a telling sign of what Clarkson is as an institution."

Students interested in attending Clarkson, might take note that the next admission open houses are on October 11 and November 15. But why wait? Prospective students can call the Admission Office at 800-527-6577 and schedule a visit right away.
