Clarkson University Announces Shipley Center Enhancements

Clarkson University Provost Thomas C. Young has announced enhancements for one of the University's centers of excellence.

The Shipley Center for Leadership and Entrepreneurship is now a University-wide resource that will be known as the Shipley Center for Innovation," said Young." School of Business Dean Timothy F. Sugrue will serve as the managing director of the Center and Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering Dean Goodarz Ahmadi as its director of Technology, bringing together complementary knowledge from both areas into one resource."

Young said that the Center will serve as an engine for economic development in the North Country by engaging in the creation of new enterprises that capitalize on emerging technologies. The Center will help exploit the commercial potential of the intellectual stock of the University.

Jessica will focus on bringing Clarkson innovations to market, gaining recognition for the technology created by our faculty and students, and creating local jobs for graduating Clarkson students, said Young. "She will also work closely with our partners at the CITEC business incubator and assist the Seaway Private Equity Corporation (SPEC) in attracting new technology-based businesses, engaged in work related to sustainable technologies, to St. Lawrence County."

Kelly received her bachelor's degree in business from Sam Houston State University in Texas and after a number of years of business experience returned to school, earning her MBA at Clarkson in May. She has served as customer service director for Wing Aviation and is a board member of Operation Grateful Nation of Houston, Texas.

The Shipley Center is named for Lucia and the late Charles Shipley, both of whom are long-time friends and generous supporters of Clarkson, through the Shipley Family Foundation. Both entrepreneurs, the Shipleys founded and built the Shipley Company into a multi-million dollar international corporation that has made significant discoveries in the field of specialty chemicals for the electronics industry. The Shipley Foundation also endows a fellowship in chemistry and underwrites the Shipley Distinguished Lectureship Series.

Clarkson University crosses the boundaries of disciplines, nations and cultures in order for discovery, engineering innovation and enterprise to come together. As a result, faculty and graduates grasp the full impact of their calling, direct their research to the world's pressing issues and lead with confidence and distinction. One in seven alumni is already a CEO or other senior executive. Located in Potsdam, N.Y., just outside the six-million-acre Adirondack Park, Clarkson is home to 3,000 students preparing for rewarding careers through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, science, and health sciences, as well as unparalleled outdoor recreation and life experiences beyond the classroom.
