Shane Rogers, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Clarkson University, was recently awarded the McKee Groundwater Protection, Restoration and Sustainable Use Clarkson University Professor Receives McKee MedalMedal.

Rogers said that he was "pleased and surprised to receive such a prestigious honor from the Water Environment Federation."

The research article that Rogers was nominated for is titled "Assessment of Intrinsic Bioremediation of a Coal-Tar-Affected Aquifer Using Two-Dimensional Reactive Transport and Biogeochemical Mass Balance Approaches."

It focuses on expedited site characterization of aquifers contaminated with coal tar compounds at former manufactured gas plants.

According to Rogers, manufacturing the gas and capturing the coal tars have historically both been done locally and not always in a clean fashion. Today, literally thousands to tens of thousands of former manufactured gas plants exist in small towns and cities and need cleaning up.

This article is not the first for Rogers on the subject. His interest with this material began in 1999 and he began working on this specific project in 2002 as his Ph.D. dissertation.

Two additional articles of the same series were published last year by Rogers and photographs that he provided were featured on the cover of the Soil Science Society of America Journal in March and April of 2007.

The article was co-written with Professors Say Kee Ong, Johanshir Golfchin, and Greg Stenback of Iowa State University, and Professor Bruce Kjartanson of Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada. The group was funded by a grant through Alliant Energy in Cedar Rapids, I.A. and conducted the research in Iowa as well.

Rogers has been at Clarkson University since June of 2007. He teaches introduction to environmental engineering, water and wastewater treatment processes, and graduate-level environmental biological processes.
