Tong Qiu, assistant professor of civil & environmental engineering at Clarkson University, is one of the newest recipients of the International Journal of Geomechanics Excellent Paper Award, awarded by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Bestowed only once every four years, Tong received the award for a paper he co-authored in 2005 with a professor and another student, while studying for his Ph.D. at UCLA.qui

The paper, titled "Model for large strain consolidation by centrifuge," focuses on consolidation process in geotechnical centrifuge tests, which are widely used to simulate large-scale civil engineering systems under static and/or seismic loadings.

Loosely interconnected with his current research interests at Clarkson, the award has only pushed Qiu to take his research to the next level. "I’m very interested in conducting more studies using the NSF Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation centrifuge facilities," he said.

Qiu’s research interests are geotechnical engineering and engineering mechanics including soil-structure interaction, large strain consolidation, solid-fluid dynamics, liquefaction in layered soil system, and contaminant transport in saturated soil.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in six alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
