Clarkson University Center for Advanced Materials Processing Receives $1.5 Million for Army Research

More than 20 Clarkson University Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP) faculty members led by Distinguished University Professor/CAMP Director S.V. Babu have received funding of $1,512,000 from the Army Research Office (ARO) to develop photovoltaic systems for use in military communications.

The researchers will develop efficient and robust organic, inorganic and hybrid photovoltaic systems, which will assist the nation’s troops in the field.

The scientists will utilize their expertise in synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials and systems.

U.S. Congressman John M. McHugh led efforts to appropriate funding for this research through the National Defense Authorization Act and subsequent Defense appropriation measures.

A significant portion of the group’s collective expertise in this area was created while working on other ARO supported projects on nanocomposite self-healing materials, ultra hydrophobic coatings and smart sensors for soldier protection.

CAMP intends to partner with New York state businesses that have similar interests and expertise.

CAMP is dedicated to research and educational programs in high-technology materials processing and is focused on industrial concerns and meeting industrial needs. CAMP’s mandate is to develop innovations in advanced materials processing and to transfer this technology to business and industry.

The Center is built on Clarkson’s recognized expertise in colloid and surface science and fine particle technology. It receives support from the New York State Office of Science, Technology, and Innovation. Additionally, CAMP-related work receives several million dollars each year from the federal government and private industry.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in six alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
