Clarkson University Professors Featured in Podcast on Small Wind Turbines

Two Clarkson University faculty members were recently featured in a podcast on small wind turbines.

Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Professor Pier Marzocca and Civil & Environmental Engineering Professor Kerop D. Janoyan were part of a seven-person expert panel, which discussed small wind turbine technology and its future.

The manufacture and installation of small wind turbines is advancing quickly to keep pace with the growing demand for new forms of renewable energy in today’s global markets.

In an effort to provide new perspectives, Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions serving a wide range of industries around the world, presented a roundtable podcast with industry experts on how the research, testing and certification of small wind turbines is impacting the industry, globally.

The podcast is available at .

Marzocca studies the interaction of aerodynamics and thermal load, their effects on advanced composite structures, and how the next generation of composite materials structures can be better engineered, if the physics of these fields is properly modeled.

He also designs and tests high performance composite wind turbine blade technologies for the small wind industry, studies their reliability, and develops associated structural health monitoring systems, as well as active and passive flow control technologies.

He received his Ph.D. degree in aeronautical and aerospace engineering from Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy.

Janoyan’s research and development expertise covers a broad range of interrelated topics with a strong focus on aspects of intelligent structural systems, in-service system health monitoring, prognostics and condition-based monitoring and maintenance.

He has an extensive history of participation in various academic and joint industrial projects tailored toward development and application of advanced sensing technologies for infrastructure, energy, industrial, and environmental systems.

He received his B.S., M.S., Engineer, and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and is a Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in California.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
