Khiem Tran Appointed Assistant Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Clarkson University

Khiem Tran has been appointed assistant professor of civil & environmental engineering at Clarkson University.

Khiem TranHe received his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the National University of Civil Engineering in Hanoi, Vietnam, and his master of science and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering, University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.

Before coming to Clarkson, Tran was a postdoctoral associate with the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida.

Tran's research interests include non-destructive testing and evaluation pertaining to the numerical modeling of mechanical waves, site characterization for design of foundations, detection of sinkholes or anomalies, and the determination of unknown foundations.

He is also interested in foundation design and capacity verification, including, numerical modeling of soil/foundation interaction, estimation of pile/shaft capacity using dynamic testing, and prediction of pile freeze.

Tran won two grants from the Florida Department of Transportation to further his research. One of them is to detect sinkholes or anomalies using full surface waves, and the other involves pile/shaft designs.

He has co-written numerous articles about geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
