Clarkson University Student Renewable Energy Teams Win Awards in Korea

Two Clarkson University renewable energy design student teams, which were invited to present their research at the 2013 International Capstone Design Contest on Renewable Energy (CORE) Technology in Mokpo, Korea, have returned with awards.

Borquist, a mechanical engineering senior from Rhinebeck, N.Y., has a team that investigated the feasibility of using wind energy to directly heat water, rather than generate electricity, for use in home space and hot water heating requirements. Their solution to this problem was to utilize wind power from a vertical axis wind turbine to directly drive a thermal churn system. A viable prototype using a spinning disk concept was built and ideas for utilizing the design for full-scale home were presented.

Hilderbrandt, a civil engineering grad student from Hilton, N.Y., presented research about a sustainable solution for small dairy farms in the Northern New York. The project consisted of the design, building, operation and performance assessment of a small-scale anaerobic digester converting farm waste into a useful energy source. The innovative design can help create a renewable energy source, along with reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Borquist took the Gold Award, while Hilderbrandt won in the Special Overall Award category. The students received certificates and prizes of a digital SLR camera and an iPad.

Borquist and Hilderbrandt were advised by Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Professor Ken Visser and Civil & Environmental Engineering Professor Stefan J. Grimberg, respectively, the former of whom accompanied the students to Korea.

"The graciousness of the hosts extended over several days, including tours of Hyundai Heavy Industries and cultural and historical locales," said Visser. "The evenings included social time with all the students and wonderful Korean cuisine and hospitality."

The CORE competition, held in January, was organized by the Leaders in Industry-University Cooperation Program (LINC) at Mokpo National University. A total of 75 teams participated, with only 15 international teams.

The objective of CORE is to provide students with an opportunity to exchange state-of the art energy information, strengthen the social networks and display innovative ideas, research results and practical experiences in renewable energy technology field. The competition encompasses areas such as biofuels, biomass, geothermal, hydroelectricity, solar energy, tidal power, ocean energy, and wind power
