Sattar Appointed Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Clarkson University

Junaed Sattar has been appointed assistant professor of computer science at Clarkson University.

Junaed SattarHe received his bachelor of science degree in computer science and engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He received his master of science degree and Ph.D., both in computer science, from McGill University.

His research interests include mobile and field robotics, human-machine interaction (HRI/HCI), multimodal machine perception, computer vision, machine learning, assistive robotics, software engineering, software systems for robotics, distributed sensor networks, sports analytics, and data mining.

Before coming to Clarkson, Sattar was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia. His research projects included identifying uncertainty and risk in human-robot dialog, local maps for smart wheelchair navigation, and a scalable, distributed human-robot interaction framework for arbitrary settings.

While at McGill University, he was a lecturer and instructor in computer science and engineering courses. As a doctoral student, he created a Linux-based quasi real-time operating environment for the Aqua amphibious robots that serves as the operating environment for real-time machine vision algorithms. He also has extensive hardware, operations and programming experience.

Sattar holds patents for an amphibious robotic device.

In 2012, he received the Best Presentation Award from the University of British Columbia Post-Doctoral Association for the talk “From the Deep Seas to Our Homes: Towards a Seamless Interface for Human-Machine Interaction." In 2009, he won a National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Industrial Research and Development Fellowship post-doctoral award. His honors include doctoral and post-doctoral awards from Fonds de Recherche du Quebec - Nature et Technologies.

Sattar served as co-chair for the inaugural Robotics and AI Multimedia Fair, Twenty-Sixth Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Toronto. He has published articles in professional journals, and has spoken at multiple seminars, conferences and outreach presentations to high school students.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
