Before coming to Clarkson, Banavar was assistant research professor at Arizona State University, where his research focused on wireless sensor networks. He was also a post-doctoral research associate at ASU.

His teaching experience includes being a contributor to the Synthesis Lectures Series for Morgan & Claypool Publishers and being a lecturer in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at ASU. He also was a graduate and undergraduate teaching assistant.

Banavar received the Graduate Teaching Excellence Award from the Graduate and Professional Students Association at Arizona State University.

Banavar's research interests are in wireless sensor networks, including distributed localization, detection and estimation algorithms for power-constrained and bandwidth-constrained systems.

He wrote grants for projects that were awarded more than $700,000 from the National Science Foundation and Sprint Communications, and holds two U.S. provisional patents.

He has contributed chapters to technical books, served as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals, written many journal articles, and material for conference proceedings. He has discussed his work at several invited talks and has made presentations at professional conferences.
