Mastorakos Appointed Assistant Professor of Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering at Clarkson University

Ioannis Mastorakos has been appointed assistant professor of mechanical & aeronautical engineering at Clarkson University.

Ioannis MastorakosMastorakos received both his B.Sc. in physics and his Ph.D. in engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

Before coming to Clarkson, he was clinical assistant professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University.

Mastorakos has been a consultant for HyperCo consulting services in Thessaloniki, Greece, where he advised city councils and regional governments on submitting funding proposals to Greek and European authorities and funding agencies.

He also served two years in the Greek Army, attaining the rank of sub-lieutenant.

Some of his current research involves failure of metals and alloys; mechanical properties of nanometallic composite materials using molecular and dislocation dynamics; the effect of interfacial geometry on the strength of nanometallic materials composites; mechanical properties of composite nanowires and nanofoams using molecular dynamics; and healing of silicon glasses during heating.

Mastorakos has been active in writing and winning major funding proposals. He served as co-principal investigator in a $350,000 three-year project from the U.S. Department of Energy and the same amount from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for another three-year project.

He received multiple fellowships from the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology and the Commission of European Communities for research projects such as reactor vessel integrity in severe accidents,

Mastorakos has written extensively, including white papers, articles for scientific journals, and invited papers. He has been a speaker and has presented his work around the U.S. and in Europe.

In 2011, he organized a mini-symposium for the International Conference on Plasticity in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Additionally, he was a member of organizing committees for other scientific gatherings held at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

He is a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Research Society, and the Metallurgical Society.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
