Prestigious Physical Chemistry Journal Features Clarkson University Research on Cover

A leading physical chemistry research publication featured the work of a Clarkson University research team on a cover of a spring issue.

Royal Society of ChemistryThe Royal Society of Chemistry's Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics journal published the article, "Reaction-Diffusion Degradation Model for Delayed Erosion of Cross-Linked Polyanhydrides Biomaterials," in its May 2015 issue. The work contains a theoretical model of time-delayed erosion for drug delivery applications.

The article reports findings by Clarkson doctoral student of physics Sergii Domanskyi of Kiev, Ukraine, and Katie L. Poetz of Oak Lawn, Ill., who received her doctorate in chemistry this year. They worked on the research with Professor of Physics and Robert A. Plane Endowed Chair Vladimir Privman and Professor and Chair of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science Devon Shipp.

In the experiment, Domanskyi said, a long delay was observed before the erosion of polymer samples set in and mimicked drug release in the system.

“The experimental data for this erosion process was limited, but we tried several models to investigate the reason for this phenomenon," he said. "With numerous modifications, it worked out in a relatively simple model that has predictive power, though it needs to be tested with more similar experiments."

Poetz said the Department of Physics and Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science worked together on this project to gain a better understanding of the chemical and physical perspectives of the experiment.

"This dealt with synthesizing polymers and understanding how these polyanhydrides degrade, which is why we collaborated," she said. "The erosion delay wasn't expected initially, but with gaining a better understanding, these results can be applied to other biomedical research and used in further drug release studies.”
