Martinez Appointed Associate Professor of Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering at Clarkson University

Marcias Martinez has been appointed associate professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering at Clarkson University.

Marcias MartinezHe received his bachelor of engineering, master of engineering in mechanical engineering, and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, all from Carleton University.

Prior to accepting this position, he was an assistant professor at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. While there, his responsibilities included being principal investigator on the development of a physics-based model known as Holistic Structural Integrity Process (HolSIP), with a primary goal of estimating remaining component life in critical aerospace and wind energy components. He also supervised master's degree and Ph.D. candidates, performing state-of-the-art research in structural health monitoring and smart structures. Additionally, he taught and led design teams.

Martinez also has teaching experience as an adjunct professor at Carleton University, where he supervised master's degree and Ph.D. candidates performing state-of-the-art research in structural health monitoring and smart structures.

His research and academic experience has always been combined with full-time work at government and research institutes. From 2005 to 2012, he was associate research officer for the National Research Council of Canada. In that capacity, he evaluated and developed sensor technologies and systems for aerospace applications in order to help maintain the structural integrity of civilian and military aircraft.

Martinez also secured customer research funding of more than $1.5 million over five years for developing structural health monitoring platforms to help evaluate the structural health system under realistic load and service conditions.

He was also a thermal analyst for CMP Design Inc. of Ottawa, where he sought to improve the design of technology used in patch bonding repair of aircrafts. As a process engineer for WorldHeart Inc., also of Ottawa, he assisted in the design and testing of an artificial heart.

Martinez has written and co-written extensively in his field, publishing articles, conference papers, book chapters, refereed publications and government publications. He has been a keynote speaker and an invited speaker at professional gathering abroad and in the United States. He also has taken leadership roles in organizing and chairing conferences, and serving on panels.

He is associate editor of the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures. He is a permanent member of the organizing committee for the International Conference of Adaptive Structure and Technologies (ICAST).

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
