Malone Central School District Students Engineer Plastic Foam Boats at Clarkson University

Students from Malone Central School District arrived at Clarkson University ready to put their plastic foam boats to the test.

MCSDThe students had spent five weeks designing and building the boats at school using the basics of engineering and keeping a notebook on their progress. As part of their visit to campus, they conducted experiments in the water resources engineering lab to see how far each design would travel in water.

The Clarkson exercise was part of a series of programs developed in collaboration with Malone Central School District. The programs are supported with School Improvement Grants from the New York State Education Department.

John Miletich, a science teacher with the school district, said these education programs provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge outside of the classroom.

"This is where they're using what they've learned and seeing how the science is applied," he said. "They get to come to a real engineering school and see where this could lead them in a few years."

Mary Margaret Small, director of Educational Partnerships at Clarkson, said the outreach programs expose students to the educational opportunities on a college campus and enable them to connect with Clarkson students and faculty.

"We're really creating opportunities for students to cultivate their own interests, and Clarkson faculty are so willing to help them cultivate those interests," she said. "Clarkson students also benefit from getting to articulate what they've learned and explain their research to high school students."

Spring semester programs will include a full day with the Clarkson physical therapy faculty examining the human shoulder, possible injuries and how to prevent and treat them.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
