Clarkson University HEOP Students Wrap Gifts with Potsdam Holiday Fund for Families in Need

Dozens of Clarkson University students and staff celebrated the season of giving by wrapping presents for families in need.

AOE HEOPThe Clarkson University New York State Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (AOE HEOP) members volunteered to wrap presents with the Potsdam Holiday Fund this month to help the organization prepare for the holidays.

The Potsdam Holiday Fund serves more than 300 families in need, including more than 600 children and 100 seniors in the Potsdam, N.Y., area. The organization reaches families in Madrid, Hopkinton, Nicholville, Brasher Falls, Chase Mills, Fort Jackson, West Stockholm and Winthrop.

AOE HEOP students participate in several service projects throughout the semester, and this is their second year wrapping gifts for the Potsdam Holiday Fund. AOE HEOP Director Tammy McGregor-Twiss collaborated with Pam Yugaris, president of the Potsdam Holiday Fund, to develop the project to help connect students and the community.

The students gathered later that week at McGregor-Twiss's house for a holiday meal.

"Our community service project carried the theme of wrapping up the semester and, most importantly, providing for families in need," said Erin Cook, assistant director of AOE HEOP. "One thing that is definitely true about our program of students is that everyone gets along just like a family. Our students live, study, laugh, cry and sometimes even argue like brothers and sisters. Bringing them over to Tammy's house is a nice way to show them how important they are—not only to us as staff—but to the Clarkson community as well."

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
