Clarkson University's S.V. Babu Receives Second Prestigious IBM Faculty Award

S.V. Babu, Clarkson University Distinguished University Professor and director of Clarkson’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP), has received an IBM 2016 Faculty Award.

S.V. BabuThe $30,000 award is highly competitive and recognizes the quality of Babu's research program and its importance to IBM's industry. Babu is also a recipient of a 2004 IBM Faculty Award.

Babu is an expert in the field of chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) and holds 31 patents.

CMP generally involves the planarization at the nanolevel of uneven topography on a substrate’s surface, typically a semiconductor-related substrate. The planarized surface allows for a much higher precision in photolithography, allowing a large number of interconnecting metal layers to be added sequentially on the substrate surface, analogous to a multi-story structure.

Babu has supervised 41 Ph.D. and 38 master of science students and is a co-author of more than 250 professional publications, including190 peer-reviewed publications.

He co-organized many symposiums and served as a keynote speaker numerous times. He was honored in 2010 with the Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai. In addition, the World Education Congress held in Mumbai, India, honored him in 2012 with an Education Leadership Award for his outstanding leadership and contributions to the field of education.

Recently, Babu led the publication of a Focus Issue on “Chemical Mechanical Planarization: Advanced Material and Consumable Challenges” by the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology (Vol. 4, Issue 11, 2015). He also edited a book, titled Advances in Chemical Mechanical Planarization that was just published by Woodhead publishing, a division of Elsevier.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
