Clarkson University President Tony Collins has announced that R. John Milne has been granted tenure and promoted from Neil '64 & Karen Bonke Assistant Professor of Engineering & Management to Neil '64 & Karen Bonke Associate Professor of Engineering & Management in the School of Business.

R. John MilneMilne has been a faculty member since 2010. His work focuses on applying the mathematical techniques of operations research to solve complex problems in supply chain management, planning, and scheduling.

Milne has 16 refereed journal articles and more than 40 U.S. patents. An article he published in 2015 was designated as the President’s Pick by the Institute of Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).

Milne teaches courses in operations research, operations and supply chain management, and a capstone design project-based class for engineering & management seniors. His students have filed 33 provisional patent applications. In 2015, he received the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award.

Since 2013, Milne has served as the special issue editor of an annual issue of Interfaces focusing on the Franz Edelman Finalist Award papers. In 2016, he became chair of CPMS, the practice section of INFORMS.

Wagner Prize from INFORMS for co-developing efficient methods for solving a mixed integer program for semiconductor supply chain optimization. In 2001, he received INFORM’s Franz Edelman Finalist Award for another supply chain management application at IBM Microelectronics, an effort that reduced inventory by $80 million in 1999 alone while improving customer service.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located in Potsdam, N.Y., and Schenectady, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through more than 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, education, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
