Clarkson University's Michelle Meyer Appointed to APA Commission on Ethics Processes

Clarkson University's Michelle Meyer has been appointed to the American Psychological Association's (APA) Commission on Ethics Processes.

Michelle MeyerMeyer, an assistant professor of bioethics and director of bioethics policy, has been selected as one of 17 distinguished psychologists and ethics experts from other disciplines to serve on a special commission to review the APA's ethics processes and procedures.

This blue-ribbon panel was formed after an independent review found there was undisclosed coordination between some APA officials and military psychologists. This resulted in ethical guidance for psychologists in national security settings that was no less restrictive than the United States Department of Defense interrogation guidelines.

The commission is charged with evaluating and recommending changes to APA's ethics processes, such as educative and adjudicative functions, potential conflicts in human rights considerations, assessment of current policies, and practices and procedures of the ethics office.

"The commission will review APA’s educative and adjudicative functions related to ethics; potential conflicts in human rights considerations; and current policies, practices and procedures of the Ethics Office," APA President Susan H. McDaniel said. "Further, the commission has been charged with benchmarking APA's Ethics Office processes with the ethics processes of other professional associations."

The commission is expected to complete its work in 2016. A progress report is planned for the August 2016 board and council meetings, with a final report planned for the February 2017 meetings of the APA board of directors, council leadership team and council of representatives.
