Clarkson University Doctoral Candidate Studying Breast Cancer Earns Travel Award for Biochemistry Conference

Clarkson University student Roshanak Aslebagh of Tehran, Iran, has earned a travel award to present her breast cancer research at an international conference.

Roshanak AslebaghAslebagh, a doctoral candidate in Clarkson's Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science, received a travel award from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to attend the ASBMB 2016 Annual Meeting in April in San Diego, Calif.

Aslebagh researches breast cancer biomarkers with the goal of being able to diagnose and treat the disease earlier and improve the prognosis. She uses mass spectrometry and proteomics to analyze human breast milk and blood and identify potential protein biomarkers for cancer.

"Biomarkers can help in so many different ways," she said. "One way is early detection of cancer, and if the patient is already in the process of treatment, you can monitor treatment and see if it works for that patient."

Biomarkers can be different for different types of cancer, Aslebagh said, so it is important to continue researching how proteins and other molecules are affected by diseases compared to the controls.
Aslebagh said there are not many groups researching cancer biomarkers in breast milk, so she is looking forward to attending the conference and learning about how other researchers are working to identify biomarkers.

The ASBMB is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization with more than 12,000 members The society's purpose is to advance the science of biochemistry and molecular biology through publication of scientific and educational journals, organization of scientific meetings, advocacy for funding of basic research and education, support of science education at all levels, and promoting the diversity of individuals entering the scientific workforce.

Clarkson University educates the leaders of the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as an owner, CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. With its main campus located in Potsdam, N.Y., and additional graduate program and research facilities in the Capital Region and Beacon, New York, Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university with signature areas of academic excellence and research directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through more than 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, education, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and innovation with enterprise.
