Clarkson University Welcomes Bowman as Senior Associate Dean of Graduate Business Programs

Clarkson University has welcomed Alan Bowman as senior associate dean of graduate business programs and professor of management science & operations.

Alan BowmanBowman was previously a faculty member at Union Graduate College (UGC), which merged into Clarkson in February. He is based at Clarkson's Capital Region Campus in Schenectady, N.Y., the former UGC.

His areas of expertise are operations management, management science, probability and statistics, computer simulation, Six Sigma and Total Quality Management, inventory management, and scheduling.

Bowman's consulting activities include developing computer simulations of business operations to facilitate process improvements, providing Six Sigma training and project advising, statistical analysis of costs and their drivers in both the electric utility and the heath care industries, and call center scheduling.

He has published many articles in journals such as Operations Research, Management Science, Production and Operations Management, Annals of Operations Research, Naval Research Logistics, Journal of Quality Technology, and Simulation.

Bowman was a professor of management at Union College from 1990-2003 and then at Union Graduate College, where he served as associate dean of the School of Management from 2009-2016. He was also interim dean in 2011 and again in 2015-16.

Before his academic posts, he worked as an industrial engineer for Reynolds Aluminum and as an internal management consultant for the Salt River Project, an electric and water utility located in Arizona.

He received both his bachelor of science in industrial engineering and his MBA from Arizona State University, and his Ph.D. in operations research from Cornell University.
