Clarkson University Among Top Schools in US for Practice-Centric Operations Research Publications

The Rothkopf Rankings have featured Clarkson University among the top schools in the United States for contribution to operations research practice literature.

BHSHOperations research is the scientific discipline of applying advanced analytics methods to improve management decision making. Practice literature refers to publications on operations research methods used in industry, governments and other nonprofit organizations.

Clarkson was honored in three categories related to visibility, yield and impact.

Clarkson was ranked 19th among U.S. institutions for its "yield" score for practice-based publications. Yield records the proportional contribution of an institution's authors to practice-centric publications.

In the visibility category, Clarkson placed 23rd. Only 44 institutions in the U.S. were recognized for the amount of operations research articles and columns published in the academic journals Interfaces and Operations Research. Each column was counted as one-half of an article.

Clarkson also was ranked 25th for "academic yield," which is the proportion of an institution's academic contribution to operations research articles on practice. This measure shows the academic yield of authors while removing any penalty from working with practitioners.

"We are honored to be recognized for our faculty’s applied work in operations research and advanced analytics," said Clarkson School of Business Dean Dayle M. Smith. "In addition to benefiting industry, this research activity enables our students to learn operations research and data analytics from those who have applied it in the real world."

Published in Interfaces by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Rothkopf Rankings assess the activity of universities in the production of practice-centric operations research between 2009 and 2015.

Clarkson University educates the leaders of the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as an owner, CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. With its main campus located in Potsdam, N.Y., and additional graduate program and research facilities in the Capital Region and Beacon, New York, Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university with signature areas of academic excellence and research directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through more than 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, education, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and innovation with enterprise.
