Tan Appointed Assistant Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Clarkson University

Chee-Keong Tan has been appointed assistant professor of electrical & computer engineering at Clarkson University.

Chee-Keong TanHe received his bachelor of engineering degree in electrical engineering and graduated with first class honors from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Lehigh University.

His research interests are related to the novel materials and nanostructure design for future devices, specifically for solid state lighting technologies. He is focusing in the field of dilute-anion III-Nitride semiconductors, which is a new class of semiconductor with unique properties for device applications. He has several U.S. patents pending, including that of new solar materials, flexible electronics, and new deep UV materials.

Prior to receiving his doctoral degree, Tan worked as a research assistant and was active as an officer and member of the SPIE (International Society for Optical Engineering) student chapter at Lehigh University. He also served as vice president and founding member of the Optics and Photonics Society at Lehigh.

Among his many academic honors, Tan won the Department of Energy's solid state lighting research and development workshop poster competition in 2016, as well as SPIE Educational Scholarship on Optics and Photonics He received many scholarships and awards while at Lehigh, including the Sherman Fairchild Fellowship, CPN Graduate Fellowship (only three awarded) and the Rossin Doctoral Fellow.

He has presented his work at professional conferences in Asia and the United States. He also has contributed more than 60 refereed journal and conference articles in total.

Tan was a research undergraduate student mentor in the NFS-supported Summer Experience Research Program at Lehigh University. He was also a substitute lecture and visiting lecturer tour organizer.

His memberships include the International Society for Optical Engineering, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and American Physical Society.

Clarkson University educates the leaders of the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as an owner, CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. With its main campus located in Potsdam, New York, and additional graduate program and research facilities in the Capital Region and Beacon, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university with signature areas of academic excellence and research directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through more than 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, education, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo and connect discovery and innovation with enterprise.
