Clarkson University Grad Student Earns Globecom Travel Grant

Maryam Pouryazdanpanah, who is pursuing her Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering at Clarkson University, has been awarded a travel grant to attend IEEE Globecom, early this December in Washington.

Maryam PouryazdanpanahThe event is one of two flagship conferences of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Communications Society. Founded in 1884, IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional society. The association is dedicated to advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity. It is designed to serve professionals involved in all aspects of the electrical, electronic, and computing fields and related areas of science and technology that underlie modern civilization.

“People from all over the world come together and share knowledge and research. It's a very prestigious event. I'm honored to be awarded the grant to attend,” says Pouryazdanpanah.

According to the IEEE website, Globecom attracts about 3,000 submitted scientific papers. A technical program committee of more than 1,500 experts provides more than 10,000 reviews, and from this a small fraction of the submitted papers are accepted for publication and presentation at the conference.

Pouryazdanpanah learned about two months ago that her research on game theoretic approach for incentivizing users to truthfully participate in crowd-sensing campaigns was among the projects accepted for presentation in an established workshop of Globecom.

“I'm really excited. I started the project in 2015 and it's been very fast-paced since then,” she notes. “I'm looking forward to meeting the many researchers and industry leaders who will gather for this conference.”

A native of Iran, Pouryazdanpanah is on track to complete her doctoral studies earlier than the usual 4-5-year timeline. She credits this to her adviser, Assistant Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering Burak Kantarci, and "all the resources available” at Clarkson.

Clarkson University educates the leaders of the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as an owner, CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. With its main campus located in Potsdam, N.Y., and additional graduate program and research facilities in the Capital Region and Beacon, New York, Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university with signature areas of academic excellence and research directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through more than 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, education, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and innovation with enterprise.
