Clarkson University PT Student Set to Lead the Charge for His Peers

Clarkson University graduate student John LaRue will soon be able to add one more real-world experience to his resume: advocacy. He has been selected to serve as a student delegate to the New York Physical Therapy Association's 2017 Delegate Assembly on May 19 to 20 in Albany.

John LaRueA native of Liverpool, N.Y., LaRue is finishing his second year of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, which includes hands-on clinical experiences as well as classroom work. The New York Physical Therapy Association (NYPTA) is the highest policy- making group for the state and LaRue will be one of just two student delegates to attend the gathering and learn more about the field he will be entering.

"As a student, I'd be a non-voting delegate, but will be representing all students involved. My job is to know NYPTA policies, to be an advocate, and to stand up for the profession and those involved. I'll help lead the charge for students. This is an opportunity for me to see advocacy on a closer view, and to meet other students," he said.

He points to this professional gathering as "another example of a really good opportunity" that the American Physical Therapy Association and the New York Physical Therapy Association as well as program at Clarkson University provide.

"It's all positive to get students involved during this fascinating and ever-changing time in health care. There are a lot of important conversations to have," he said.

LaRue received his bachelor of science degree in biology from Clarkson in 2015 in the University's Pre-Physical Therapy Program. He then chose to go on to the almost three-year physical therapy program. He has a few more months of classes, followed by clinical rotations. He's considering various options for the future, but is interested in orthopedics and sports medicine.

"I'd like to own my own practice in the far future," he said. "I especially like how strength and conditioning interacts with physical therapy rehabilitation, how you prevent injuries and keep yourself ahead of the game. It's fascinating."
