Clarkson University Student Sonja Gagen Recognized by Udall Foundation

Clarkson University student Sonja Gagen '18, an environmental engineering major from Aspen, Colo., has been awarded an honorable mention for the nationally competitive Udall Scholarship.

Sonja GagenGagen, a graduate of Aspen High School, participated in the National Science Foundation Advancing Sustainable Systems and Environmental Technologies to Serve Humanity Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), last summer, under the guidance of Clarkson Associate Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering Shane Rogers.

Gagen and Rogers collaborated with the Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research in Norway to collect data from seaweed industries in Europe, with the long-term goal of using macroalgae for wastewater remediation.

This summer Gagen will participate in an NSF REU at Colorado School of Mines where she will investigate energy positive wastewater treatment.

Gagen has served as a Clarkson Institute for a Sustainable Environment intern, president of the Environmental Engineering Honor Society, Clarkson Outing Club service chair, and New York Water Environment Association secretary. She was also a member of Clarkson’s Varsity Alpine team.

The Udall Foundation honors the legacy of brothers Morris K. and Stewart L. Udall. Each year, the foundation awards scholarships to 50 outstanding college sophomores and juniors in the United States.

Udall Scholars demonstrate leadership, public service, and commitment to environmental problems or issues related to American Indian nations. Scholarship recipients receive up to $7,000 for educational expenses for one to two years of undergraduate study.

The office of the Honors Program associate director of advising and scholarship preparation is available to assist Clarkson undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing nationally-competitive fellowships and scholarships. Please contact for more information.
