Environmental Biology

Students interested in careers in ecology and environmental sciences will have a great time at Clarkson. We have hundreds of acres of woodland, a river, several ponds, the St. Lawrence River and the Adirondacks in our backyard. Our ecology and organism biology courses use these resources as an outdoor laboratory and many faculty in biology and environmental engineering have active research programs in natural areas nearby.

Our faculty study vertebrates and lakes in ecological settings, with most courses in these areas having a significant field component. Students in this concentration follow the biology curriculum, filling out their program with electives in environmental biology.

Summer programs and summer abroad programs at marine stations such as Woods Hole MBL in Massachusetts, Friday Harbor Labs in Washington State, or the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) in Costa Rica provide valuable experiences in environmental biology. Students also should look at the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates for opportunities to conduct research at different sites across the country. There are may job opportunities in ecology and environmental science in government, private consulting and academic institutions.

Environmental Science and Policy Program and Environmental Health Science Program are two interdisciplinary programs closely linked with the biology department with curricula that provide opportunities to gain fundamental and applied scientific knowledge and develop hands-on skill in the laboratory and field. In addition, The Institute for a Sustainable Environment offers interdisciplinary master's and doctoral programs in Environmental Science and Engineering for students interested in continuing their environmental science education.

Students interested in careers in ecology, forestry or fisheries biology should plan on undergraduate research.
