79th ACS Colloid and Surface Science Symposium

Today the convenience and ubiquity of consumer products can lead to a misconception that such products are simple and their behavior well-understood. In fact, many consumer products are complex fluids in every sense of the term as it is routine for examples such as shampoo and laundry detergent to contain 15-20 ingredients including polymers, surfactants, colloids, and solvents. The colloid and surface phenomena that impart the desired qualities to consumer products are just as likely to cause nonlinear and time-dependent behavior during processing, transport, aging, and ultimate consumer use. Although many aspects of consumer product equilibrium behavior are not well-understood, kinetic effects can be just as important and even less well-understood. As the consumer product and medical/pharmaceutical industries continue to overlap, the market size and potential impact of these materials only increases.

This symposium will bring together established and younger speakers on both theoretical and applied topics that represent new advances of interest to the Colloid and Surface community as well as the consumer products industry. Papers on characterization techniques, processing, performance, scale-up, modeling, and formulation are all welcomed.

One page abstracts for 20-min oral presentations should be sent by email in electronic format to Patrick Spicer (Email: spicer.pt@pg.com) by to April 15, 2005.
