Introduction to Computers

ATTENDANCE: Required for all classes. This is a skill oriented hands-on computer lab course. There will be some lecture/demonstration but a majority of the class will be hands-on working with tutorials and assignments. Be sure to bring your textbook, diskettes and envelopes with you to ALL classes. Request for excused absences should be made through the Dean of Students office or verified for illness through the Health Services office.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

To develop the basic skills in using computer software productively. The course will cover the following topics in-depth: navigating the networks at Clarkson and getting your E-mail; using Windows 98; word processing with Word; spreadsheet creation and use with Excel; database creation and maintenance with Access; and creating presentations with PowerPoint.

Exams are non-cumulative and based on the text, in-class discussions, and lab work covering the assigned material. No students are excused from any exam(including the FINAL EXAM) except with a valid excuse. Exams will be hands-on testing of your computer skills and will be closed book and notes. The first three exams will be given in the class lab during class time on the dates indicated on the course outline. The FINAL EXAM will be scheduled by the university during final exam week. Makeup exams will be given only to students who have a legal excuse from the Dean of Students. All makeup exams will be given at a time designated by the instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor ASAP when an exam is not taken as scheduled.

All homework assignments are due at class time on the day the homework is shown on the syllabus.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE. Planned absences (i.e. athletic commitments, job trips, etc.) do not excuse the student from completing and handing in the assignments by the required due date. All homework assignments must be submitted on diskette along with the required printouts and written questions. Your homework assignment must be placed in an envelope with your name, class and section clearly written on it.
