New Buildings on Campus to meet LEED Silver Criteria
Clarkson has adopted many green building policies, including a commitment to meeting criteria for LEED Silver on all current and future construction. As an example, the Technology Advancement Center (TAC) has a microturbine to provide heat and power, solar thermal systems, rainwater collection and low flow toilets as a showcase for sustainable building design. Munter Trail System Provides River Access and Views
John Munter, a physics graduate of the class of 1959 has taken the concept of “in-kind” donations to a new level. He led a team that designed and built a set of trails and overlooks to highlight the beauty of the Raquette River waterfront. The team of volunteers contributing this project included faculty, municipalities, alumni and area businesses.  Munter used skills he developed as President of Munter Enterprises, Middle Grove, NY, a leader in the Northeast construction industry, to build the new trail system on campus.  The restoration and revitalization of the riverfront is a key element in Clarkson's Master Plan. Mr. Munter's efforts have been transformative in making this area of campus a great destination for walking, biking or bird watching.

Renovation of Residence Halls   
Fourth floors were added to all of the major dormitories over the past several years. The extension of the buildings upwards helped to preserve campus green space while providing extra beds needed to house our students. The Woodstock Apartment Complex has been completely renovation. Four of these buildings are being used for a Smart Housing research project to test the value of sensor and control systems with energy use display dashboards for reducing energy and water use. All of these renovation projects follow Clarkson's new document defining standards for residential buildings, which includes green building requirements for low VOC paint, low flow water appliances, well-insulated roofs and windows, and high efficiency energy and lighting systems. Academic and Administrative Spaces Revitalized

  • Retrofitting the core areas of Price and Graham Hall as enabled all key administrative service units to be centrally located and finally all on the hill campus. 
  • Clarkson is committed to increasing our research activities, including fundamental research and innovation and entrepreneurial endeavors and expanding academic programs in the health sciences. Creative ways to reconfigure space has enabled these initiatives to move forward. 
  • Peyton Hall, the old Chemical Engineering building on the downtown campus has been renovated into an incubator to enhance the innovation and development of ideas from student and faculty research into new products and businesses. A new second floor has been added to part of the CAMP annex to house the NAB lab, which is office and laboratory space for fundamental nano-bio research endeavors.
  • A lab that is critical for the Physical Therapy program and the new Physician's Assistant degree has been renovated to meet specifications required for a cadaver lab.

Recreation is critical for student wellness, but providing suitable playing surfaces and lighting and heating these large spaces can be a challenge during the academic year. The resurfacing of Hantz Field now enables spring time practice and playing opportunities, even when the rest of campus is covered with snow. The lighting retrofits in Cheel arena and the Alumni Gym both improve the quality of light for games and greatly reduce the energy consumed for lighting these spaces.
