Maintaining Status

In this Section

It is important that as an International Student you understand your immigration ‘status’ and responsibilities to maintain that ‘status’. The advisers with International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) are here to assist you in maintaining ‘status’ – but – it is your responsibility to comply with all immigration regulations that apply to your ‘non-immigrant classification’. Always seek advice if you are not sure of something – it will be in your best interest in maintaining your status.

Violations of status will result in loss of employment benefits with possible removal from the U.S. unless you are properly reinstated to F-1 or J-1 status. See ‘Reinstating Status’ for more information.

The following are the minimum status requirements –

  • Always have a valid passport – do not let this expire

  • Always have a valid I-20 or DS-2019

  • Enroll in the required credits for your student career

  • Do not engage in unauthorized employment
