A team of students from Clarkson University recently partnered with Plattsburgh High School (PHS) students and Georgia-Pacific (GP) representatives to design a recreational park for GP employees.  The project was completed as part of the Business Educational Partnership Program at Clarkson University, a special program that brings together local businesses and educational institutions to solve current business issues.plattsburgh-high

The team assists PHS students in the development of various management skills, including leadership, teambuilding, and conflict management.  In addition, the Clarkson team provides the high school students with a foundation in the engineering and business disciplines to solve case studies offered by GP.

The park development project began in the fall of 2000 with a visit to the proposed location, a former dredging site on Lake Champlain owned by GP.  The company decided to develop the area into a recreational park for its employees and enlisted the help of the Clarkson and PHS teams.

During the fall semester, the Clarkson team visited the site with the PHS students and assisted them with land surveying, design proposals, cost estimations, and other aspects of the case.  After all data was collected and analyzed, the PHS students built a prototype of the park and presented their proposal to the GP steering committee in January 2001.  GP expects to begin construction of the recreational park within the coming year.

Upon completion of the case, the teams began a new assignment in the field of human resources.  The spring project involves the planning of a ceremony and banquet for GP retirees and service-award winners.  Requirements for this case study include a videotaped oral history of the Plattsburgh paper mill, as well as the creation of a slideshow presentation and a commemorative program booklet.

The Plattsburgh team consists of thirteen juniors and seniors, known as the ITEAM (Industrial Technology, Tech Prep Engineering and Management), who receive credit in English, math, science, and technology for their completion of the assigned projects.  Four teachers representing the different subject areas advise the students throughout the yearlong program: Marianne Bernard, Roger Lacroix, Steve Tice, and Tom Via.

Members of the Clarkson team include Eliana Salcedo (manufacturing management grad student, Saranac Lake), team leader Molly Rock (MBA grad student, Morrisonville), and Mark Wagner (mechanical engineering and business administration student, Corfu).
