Clarkson To Play A Role In Center Of Excellence In Infotonics

Clarkson University's Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP) recently hosted a meeting to discuss Clarkson's role in the newly proposed New York State Center of Excellence in Infotonics. The Center will be based in Rochester, N.Y., and hopes to receive funding of $300 million over five years from New York State, Xerox, Corning, Kodak, other companies and the federal government. A number of universities, including Clarkson, will also participate in the Center.

Representatives from Corning, Kodak and the New York Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research spent a day at Clarkson discussing the research areas in which Clarkson could contribute expertise, and how the Center will be developed. CAMP Director S.V. Babu made a presentation regarding Clarkson's overlap with the Center in areas of research and curricular development. The representatives also toured CAMP and visited faculty research labs.

By promoting collaboration between industry, universities and government, the Center will reinvigorate the high-tech business environment in upstate New York. The Center will create world-class photonic and microsystems prototyping and pilot-line production facilities and infrastructure that can be shared by collaboration partners.

Research conducted at the Center will include areas such as photonics, microelectronics, optical networks, new materials development, and optical physics.

The Center of Excellence in Infotonics will benefit industry through the creation of a skilled workforce, access to state-of-the-art research facilities, and access to innovative university research. University partners, such as Clarkson, will benefit through access to the research facilities, faculty collaboration with other researchers, opportunities for Ph.D. students to conduct research at the facility, and funding for research projects.
