Clarkson University President Tony Collins has announced that Kathleen R. Fowler has been granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor to associate professor of mathematics in the School of Arts & Sciences.

Fowler joined Clarkson’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in the fall 2003 after graduating from North Carolina State University with a Ph.D. in computational applied mathematics. Kathleen Fowler

Her research focuses on applied optimization with an emphasis on developing hybrid derivative-free techniques for simulation-based engineering problems. She has worked on a variety of interdisciplinary projects in the areas of hydrology, polymer processing, and physiology.

She is an active member in the scientific community -- publishing in mathematics and engineering journals and giving more than 25 talks and organizing seven mini-symposia in the last six years at national and international conferences. In 2008, she hosted the American Institute of Mathematics Workshop on Derivative-Free Hybrid Optimization Methods for Solving Simulation-Based Problems in Hydrology.

Fowler has received Clarkson’s Outstanding New Teacher Award and is the founder and faculty sponsor for the student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (open to all majors and genders), which serves as a "math club" and provides services and activities for the campus and community. She is also a faculty coach for the International Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

Fowler has been involved in grants from the National Science Foundation and various New York State agencies that have brought well over $3 million to the North Country. In particular, she has been a co-director for the national middle school "Mathcounts" competition, as well serving as an organizer for the annual "Pi Day" celebration, which hosted more than 70 middle-school students last year. She also co-developed the New York State Education "IMPETUS for Career Success" program.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in six alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
